About Us

Transforming Learning, Revolutionizing Healthcare

The Centre for Faculty Development

The Centre for Faculty Development (CFD) is committed to supporting the development of our participants and community members in their multiple roles and activities in health professions education. The CFD was founded in 2002 as a partnership between St. Michael’s Hospital (now known as Unity Health Toronto) and the University of Toronto (UofT), Temerty Faculty of Medicine. The Centre is positioned as an Extra-Departmental Unit (EDU) within UofT and is known for the strength and relevance of its programming and its internationally recognized scholarship.

We provide flexible and adaptable programming that is responsive to emerging needs, facilitates communities and networking, and supports capacity building across the system. Our Centre’s offerings include longitudinal programs, individual workshops, curated lists of resources, and faculty development consultations with local, national, and international partners.

Together with our deeply committed community of educators, learners, leaders, scholars and advocates, we are positioned to lead the way for greater health system change and impact. We are energized to work together with our partners, collaborators and communities towards our vision.

Defining Faculty Development

Faculty development is on ongoing process that enables individuals such as clinical preceptors, graduate supervisors, classroom instructors, and patient and family partners, to evolve and grow into their roles and activities within health professions education. These activities encompass clinical and classroom teaching, curriculum development, program evaluation, academic leadership, wellness initiatives, and advocating for systems change. Faculty development initiatives, may be informal or formal, and can include a diverse array of activities such as longitudinal programs, individual workshops, communities of practice, coaching, mentorship, and rounds. These initiatives are intentionally designed to be flexible and adaptable, catering to emerging needs while simultaneously fostering community building, facilitating networking, and promoting capacity building throughout the health professions education system.

Our Vision

Creating transformative learning and discovery environments today. Revolutionizing healthcare tomorrow.

Our vision speaks to desire to transform and enrich learning and discovery environments. To achieve our vision, we will continue to provide innovative and relevant programming, and communities of support for educators and learners through collaboration and knowledge mobilization.

Our Mission

Together, with our community of educators, learners, leaders, scholars and advocates, we will transform health professions education by creating exceptional programming, nurturing inclusive partnerships, mobilizing knowledge and reimagining our system.

The CFD is uniquely positioned at the heart of a thriving educational community and a diverse, interprofessional health system. We see the role of the Centre as one of bringing system level change to health professions education. We want to empower and support our communities and collaborators who inspire and motivate us to transform learning environments.

Our Values

Collaborative • Reflexive • Inclusive • Innovative • Courageous

Our values represent the culture, norms, and attitudes that we want to see reflected throughout our work, our workplace and our learning environments. Our goal is for each individual who represents the Centre to live and breathe these values, through our everyday interactions and our collective work.

Collaborative     •     Reflexive     •     Inclusive     •     Innovative     •     Courageous

Together, we will live these words through our actions.

Discover how our logo and site images recognizes our identity as a Centre and the key activities of faculty development that we support through our programs, events, and communities.

The Centre for Faculty Development, with our over two decades history in serving our academic and healthcare communities, has become synonymous with our short form acronym of CFD.  Our new logo highlights this.  The CFD is a home for learning and discovery for all those working in health professions education across a variety of teaching, learning, laboratory and healthcare environments.

The dominant dark blue represents our education identity as an Extra Departmental Unit of the Temerty Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto.  We are proud of our strong academic identity in serving faculty and learner needs by creating transformative learning and discovery environments.

CFD Logo

The CFD is proud to be a part of Unity Health Toronto, supporting our tri-site communities of interprofessional staff, physicians, faculty and learners of St. Joseph’s Health Centre, St. Michael’s Hospital and Providence Healthcare.  Our logo nods to our commitment to serving our Unity Health Toronto network through the use of colours of purple, teal, blue and orange, prominent within the Unity Health Toronto logo.  We share a strong commitment to revolutionizing healthcare.

Our use of triangles within the CFD logo itself, uses the colours of purple, teal, blue and orange to highlight the intersecting roles and activities that support faculty development:
