The reinstatement of a federal Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) role has come at a critical time in healthcare – the current state of healthcare has revealed an opportunity for change. We need a resilient and dynamic workforce to support the health needs of people in Canada. There is an opportunity before us to address these challenges to build a more equitable and sustainable system for the future. Health professionals are well positioned to influence and lead in shaping the future our ever-evolving, complex health system by creating synergies between education, practice, and policy to ensure we are future-proofing the health professions. This presentation will describe the federal CNO mandate and priorities with insights for interprofessional education, practice, and policy, highlighting the intersection therein.
Presenter
Leigh Chapman
Dr. Leigh Chapman is committed to advancing the nursing profession in Canada to ensure equitable access to quality care. As CNO for Canada, she provides strategic advice to Health Canada, plays a convening role on key nursing issues, and represents the Federal Government at public forums.
Leigh is a registered nurse (RN) who received her PhD from the University of Toronto's Lawrence S. Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing. Over the past 20 years, she has gained a deep understanding of nursing by working in both frontline and clinical leadership capacities. In addition to her role as CNO for Canada, Leigh continues to work at a community-based consumption and treatment site in Toronto, where she provides harm reduction services and frontline care.

Participants are provided with an overview of each paradigm, how they are related to common education practices in HPE and how awareness of paradigmatic details and differences support aligned teaching/assessment approaches.

Harnessing technology, we can create an effective system for information management, filtering out unwanted information, while being notified of the latest scientific articles specific to our area of expertise. Using cognitive load theory, we employ technology tools that can enable HPE stay current and informed.

12OctThis program introduces participants to the language and frameworks of anti-oppression and social justice. It explores how the Canadian healthcare system continues to participate in discrimination and oppression. It also begins to explore how health care professionals can engage in praxis, which is theory-informed action in the pursuit of social justice.
