Harnessing technology, we can create an effective system for information management, filtering out unwanted information, while being notified of the latest scientific articles specific to our area of expertise. Using cognitive load theory, we employ technology tools that can enable HPE stay current and informed.

As health professional educators (HPEs) we are inundated with information, and a very small proportion is useful for learning and application in patient care decision-making. This can lead to individuals’ feeling overwhelmed and not being effective as experts in their area of work. Harnessing technology, we can create an effective system for information management, filtering out unwanted information, while being notified of the latest scientific articles specific to our area of expertise. Using cognitive load theory, we employ technology tools that can enable HPE stay current and informed.
With the explosion of information, we need to belong in communities using the principles of Connectivism to amplify accurate information, while addressing misinformation. We propose the use of Zotero as a reference and citation manager, amplify searches for scientific information using Research Rabbit, and use Inoreader as a feed generator. This hands-on and interactive presentation is aimed at all levels of HPE (trainees, educators and faculty).

Presenters
Anoop Agrawal, M.D. is an associate professor at Baylor College of Medicine. He serves as Program Director for the combined internal medicine and pediatrics residency program. His passion is in faculty development and the integration of technology into medical education. He was selected as an Apple Distinguished Educator in 2015 for his innovations in developing best practices for utilizing mobile tablets in bedside teaching. He has been invited to share his work at numerous national and regional meetings including the ACGME, AAMC, Society of Hospital Medicine and many others. Dr. Agrawal completed his medical residency in the combined internal medicine and pediatrics program at Baylor College of Medicine and received his medical degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine.
Jennifer Benjamin is an Associate Professor in Complex Care in Academic General Pediatrics at Texas Childrens Hospital and in the Department of Education Innovation and Technology. She is the co-director for Faculty College at Texas Childrens Hospital and is the Director for Technology at Center for Research Innovation and Scholarship in Health Professions Education. Her passion and interest is the use of technology in education and she plays an active role in the Harvard Macy teaching with technology for the virtual environment course.
Heather MacNeill, MD BSc(PT) MScCH(HPTE) FRCPC, is an Associate Professor and Faculty Lead, Educational Technologies, CPD, Temerty Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto, Canada. She is Medical Director of Stroke Rehabilitation and physiatrist (PM&R) at Sinai Health System, and Digital Co-Lead, EDIA Stream, Team Primary Care. She has been teaching about, creating, and researching the effect of educational technologies in healthcare for over a decade, and co-instructs a masters and certificate course in Educational Technologies for Health Professions Education. Her research interests include faculty development in educational technology, and how technology can be leveraged for teaching and patient care such as the AMEE Guide to Online learning in health professions education.
Ken Masters, PhD HDE FDE, is an Associate Professor of Medical Informatics, Sultan Qaboos University, Sultanate of Oman. He has been involved in education for several decades, and has published on medical informatics ethics, and has authored and co-authored several AMEE Guides on Artificial Intelligence, e-learning, m-learning and related topics. He teaches Zotero as part of a larger medical informatics course to health sciences students. ORCID: 0000-0003-3425-5020.
Neil Mehta, MBBS, MS, is a Professor of Medicine and Associate Dean for Curricular Affairs at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of CWRU. He is also the Jones Day Endowed Chair in Medical Education at the Cleveland Clinic where he also serves as the Director of the Center for Technology-Enhanced Knowledge and Instructions (cTEKI). He is a staff physician in the Department of Internal Medicine and Geriatrics at the Cleveland Clinic. He is the founding co-course director of the “Transforming your Teaching with Technology” course at the Harvard Macy Institute. He is deeply interested in the areas at the of intersection of medicine, education and technology while always putting the content and pedagogical knowledge ahead of technology knowledge.
Dr. M. Tyson Pillow completed his undergraduate training at Rice University, and his medical school training at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX. After 3 years of Emergency Medicine Residency training at the University of Chicago, he returned to Baylor as faculty in the Department of Emergency Medicine. During this time, he also completed a Masters in Education program at the University of Houston. He currently serves as the Vice Chair for Faculty Affairs and Achievement for the Department of Emergency Medicine, and the Vice Chair for Education and Faculty Development for the Department of Education, Innovation & Technology at Baylor College of Medicine. Dr. Pillow’s interests focus on education, including education technology, simulation, standardized patients, feedback and evaluation, and bedside teaching. He has received numerous teaching awards, including the John P. McGovern Teaching Award (2013, 2017, 2021), the Council of Residency Directors National Faculty Teaching Award (2012, 2022), and 6 total NRF awards. He has also delivered multiple workshops on Education Technology at ACGME annual meeting, AAMC annual meeting, national Emergency Medicine academic meetings, and even the IAMSE annual meeting.

12OctThis program introduces participants to the language and frameworks of anti-oppression and social justice. It explores how the Canadian healthcare system continues to participate in discrimination and oppression. It also begins to explore how health care professionals can engage in praxis, which is theory-informed action in the pursuit of social justice.
