The Voice of the Faculty Survey is one of several initiatives deployed across the educational continuum, aimed to learn about the learning and teaching environment at the University of Toronto’s Temerty Faculty of Medicine. Targeted towards active faculty members, the survey covers several aspects of academic life, including equity, inclusion, mistreatment, and overall faculty experiences.
While the university has long relied on learner-focused surveys to guide student support, the faculty experience is an area they are eager to understand more thoroughly. This survey is a major step toward that goal. By hearing directly from faculty voices, the Temerty Faculty of Medicine will drive meaningful, system-wide initiatives that foster a healthier and more supportive working and teaching culture.
When the survey was last deployed in 2022, some concerns were raised about the collection of sociodemographic data. We want to emphasize that these data are not used to compare experiences across demographic groups. Instead, these data help the Faculty of Medicine gain a clearer understanding of the diversity within our teaching community and ensure that programs and initiatives are responsive to the varied identities represented within it. All responses are confidential: only research officers responsible for analyzing the survey will have access to the raw data. Leadership and other members of Temerty will see only aggregate results, with reporting thresholds of n=>10.
Ultimately, the Voice of Faculty Survey is more than just a questionnaire; it is an opportunity for faculty members to inform the future of the institution. The insights gathered will guide improvements, inform new initiatives, and enhance support structures, ensuring that the learning environment advances in ways that enrich both faculty and learners alike.
