Coaching
Network

Community Shared Purpose

This Coaching Network is to support those who are engaging in coaching as part of their leadership practice. We define coaching as “unlocking a person’s potential to maximize their own performance. It is helping them to learn rather than teaching them” (Whitmore, 2022: 8), and involves the “art of facilitating the performance, learning and development of another” (Downey, 1999: 15). Unlike mentorship, the context for coaching is more formal, non-directive, and often for a specified and contracted timeframe. There is focused placed on the progress towards the coachee’s own goals (O’Connell et al, 2012).

Members of this interprofessional community may be in formal or informal leadership roles across the health sciences system, and supporting others in developing themselves across the areas of leadership, teaching, scholarship and advocacy.

Community Goals

The Coaching Network is offered in partnership between Unity Health Toronto and the Centre for Faculty Development. The goals of the network are to:

  1. Create a safe learning environment for coaches to explore their coaching practice dilemmas in academic health sciences spaces.
  2. Consider models and approaches to enhance their coaching practice.
  3. Support each other in their development as coaches.
  4. Promote a culture of coaching across the academic health system.

All members of the community must be members of the Centre for Faculty Development and should create a user account, with a completed profile. *Please note that staff, physicians, patient and family partners, and learners at both Unity Health Toronto and the Temerty Faculty of Medicine have membership registration available to them at no additional cost.

Generative AI has disrupted the assumption that producing academic artifacts reflects learner engagement. This presentation argues that the integrity conversation, while understandable, is the least generative response available to us. The more important question — one that AI has finally made impossible to defer — is what the developmental activities of health professions education actually are.
