CFD Statement on Data Use and Confidentiality

All evaluation data collected by the Centre for Faculty Development (CFD) will remain confidential. Active measures taken to ensure this are outlined below. The evaluation data we collect is used for quality improvement and evaluative research in accordance with our Data Governance Framework and the following guidelines.

CFD Data Governance Framework

Data governance refers to processes, policies, standards, and technologies to ensure the proper management, security, and utilization of data. While it typically focuses on maximizing data value and minimizing risk, equity-based data governance can help redress power imbalances between data collectors and the individuals or communities the data represents.

Our Centre’s Framework shifts agency to ensure that individuals and communities have an equitable say in how data are used, who benefits and how. The Framework is dynamic, evolving through engagement, evaluation, and reflexive practice.

The Framework consists of three governance objectives: Protect People, Prioritize Equity, and Promote Data Value. These objectives inform governance principles (such as Establishing Data Rights and Ownership; Building Trust in Data; and Promoting Data Sharing and Standardization), which subsequently guide governance standards and procedures related to all facets of the Centre’s data.

The CFD team interrogates assumptions inherent in any given proposed data use with the Framework’s objectives and principles as a guide.

This approach yields both abstract and practical insights, challenging underlying biases, deepening our reflexive practices, and informing revisions to the specific data practice and refinements to the Framework itself. By formalizing equity-focused intention throughout the data lifecycle, we can prioritize equity in our data practices proactively – driving equitable data use rather than mere compliance with regulations and policy.
