Description
Climate change and other forms of environmental degradation pose direct and indirect threats to health. At the same time, the health sector itself contributes to these threats through unnecessarily carbon intensive, polluting, and wasteful care. In the face of these challenges, health professions education must equip learners with the knowledge and skills needed to protect the health of humans and the planet.
Despite growing student demand and emerging educational and professional standards, most faculty lack the knowledge and tools to meaningfully integrate planetary health content and approaches into their curricula. Moreover, health professions curricula in many programs are already densely packed, leaving limited room for the integration of new content.
This workshop seeks to better-equip faculty to meaningfully integrate planetary health into their teaching by building their knowledge base, providing them with pedagogical tools and guidance, and connecting them with a like-minded interdisciplinary academic community.
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Define planetary health and the role of health professionals in addressing and preventing harm to people and planet
- Describe opportunities for integrating planetary health into health professions education
- Contrast different curricular models and pedagogical approaches for teaching planetary health
- Identify where their own teaching aligns (or could align) with core planetary health concepts and competencies
- Identify key resources and partners that can be leveraged to create and deliver learning opportunities

Relevant Resources
Participants are encouraged to complete “Introduction to Sustainable Health Systems,” a 90-minute self-paced course available on the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons’ website. This course introduces learners to the relationship between climate change, health, and health systems; familiarizes them with the concepts of planetary health and sustainable health systems; and gets them thinking about how they might incorporate climate action and sustainability into their work. Note that the course is freely accessible to all, but requires registration with a 24-48 hour wait period before account activation/course access.
