For our kick-off session for the 2026-2027 academic year, we will start with a very compelling theme –Burnout in late career. Dr. Gino Somers will speak on issues related to understanding what contributes to burnout in late career, what physicians can do to address this and what resources are available at Temerty to support late -career physicians who are experiencing burnout. This will be followed by personal stories of burnout from three physicians from our community of practice: family physician, Dr. Flora Ricciuti, radiologist, Dr. D’Arcy Little and ophthalmologist, Dr. David Rootman. There will also be opportunities for many of you to share your stories during the session.
Dr. Gino Somers serves as Chief of the Department of Paediatric Laboratory Medicine at The Hospital for Sick Children and Deputy Chief of the Hamilton Regional Laboratory Medicine Program. He is Professor and Vice Chair in Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology at the University of Toronto, and Professor in Pathology and Molecular Medicine at McMaster University. Across these roles, he has helped advance clinical service, education, research, and organizational leadership in laboratory medicine.
Since 2020, Dr. Somers is the Physician Wellness Officer at SickKids. In this role he has led numerous initiatives resulting in tangible and measurable improvements in the wellbeing of physicians at all stages of their career across the organization.
Dr. Somers is an international award-winning pathologist who has held several international leadership roles in Paediatric Laboratory Medicine and has published extensively.
