This diagram was designed for late career physicians to reflect on their current stage of late career transitioning to retirement. We recognize that although the diagram is linear, the process is not. During a physician’s late career there are some “shifting gears” where you can move back and forth especially in the middle stages; this is determined by clinical practice issues, wellness, finances, institutional issues including practice plans, and social circumstances. We hope that this diagram encourages reflection and discussion among physicians and their families to help ensure a happy and soft landing in retirement.
