Leadership in academic and clinical settings plays a vital role in shaping learning environments, influencing systems, and advancing professional growth within the health professions. Health professionals are often invited or expected to take on leadership roles without formal preparation or structured support. While many bring strong clinical expertise and interpersonal skills, systems-level gaps in leadership development can leave early leaders without the tools or frameworks needed to navigate their new responsibilities with confidence.
This introductory workshop aims to help participants explore the foundational concepts of health professions leadership and reflect on their leadership potential. It will support participants in considering how leadership aligns with their professional goals and provide a structured approach for identifying next steps in their leadership development. Participants will be introduced to key leadership models from the literature, engage in guided self-reflection and peer discussions, and begin to map out personalized action plans for growth. Emphasis will be placed on identifying current strengths, areas for development, and available supports for emerging leaders.
By the end of the session, participants will be able to:
- Describe foundational concepts and models of health professions leadership.
- Articulate the value of including leadership in a health professional’s career pathway.
- Reflect on their own leadership strengths and areas for development.
- Draft an initial leadership development plan (inclusive of resources and supports).

Health professionals who are new to leadership or are considering leadership roles. Please note: This workshop is best suited to those without formal leadership training or those in the early stages of their leadership development.
