Description

Coaching is an increasingly valued skill for health professions educators and leaders seeking to foster growth, development, and performance in others — whether in clinical, teaching, or academic roles. Coaching, as a developmental approach, remains underutilized despite its potential to build capacity and promote sustainable growth in teaching and academic performance.

This workshop introduces a coaching approach to enhance teaching performance and professional development, with a focus on Brief Solution Focused Coaching. Participants will learn how to use structured conversations to support colleagues across domains such as teaching, leadership, scholarship, and advocacy. They will be introduced to a listening compass to guide purposeful coaching conversations and will explore how to curate stories that activate purpose, possibilities, and progress. The session includes interactive coaching exercises, reflection, and peer discussion to help translate coaching concepts into day-to-day practice.

By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Use Brief Solution Focused Coaching principles to guide developmental conversations
  • Apply the listening compass to frame productive coaching interactions
  • Support colleagues’ growth in teaching, leadership, scholarship, and advocacy through coaching
  • Curate meaningful stories that inspire forward momentum

Who would benefit most from this workshop?

  • Health professions educators
  • Clinicians, Academic or Clinical leaders
  • Anyone responsible for supporting others’ development in teaching, leadership, scholarship, or advocacy

Notes for Participation: Given the interactive nature of the session and peer coaching opportunities embedded within it, participants are encouraged to keep cameras on during the session.  This is essential to encourage the practice of coaching and to maintain psychological safety.  As such, please prepare to do this workshop in a space that enables confidentiality and privacy.

In this presentation, two fundamental human characteristics underlying many interconnected problems in an era of increasing complexity serve as the starting point for a psychological solution. The Extended Professional Identity Theory (EPIT) was developed to address collaborative challenges rooted in the very human tendencies that generate them. It conceptualizes interprofessional identity as a social construct from a psychological perspective.
