Description

Integrated instruction is key for fostering learners' adaptive expertise. It involves educators designing instructional materials and learning experiences (e.g. lecture slides and bedside discussions) that explicitly link clinical manifestations with underlying basic science mechanisms to help learners develop conceptual knowledge. This approach supports health professions learners to navigate complexity (e.g., difficult cases, case variation) and enhances their ability to acquire related knowledge in the future.

This workshop aims to provide a comprehensive introduction to integrated instruction as a teaching strategy in health professions education (HPE). By the end of the workshop, participants will have a foundation in integrated instruction and practical strategies for incorporating it into their teaching practices to enhance learning experiences and outcomes

Learning Objectives

  • Describe “integrated instruction” as a teaching strategy in HPE.
  • Identify the benefits of integrated instruction for both educators and learners.
  • Identify opportunities to apply integrated instruction into current practices.
  • Apply elements of integrated instruction to relevant educational challenges to enhance learning outcomes.

Who would benefit from this workshop?

This workshop is designed for health professionals and/or educators who are considering implementing integrated instruction into their current teaching practice.
