Description

Healthcare environments are dynamic and often present complex, unpredictable challenges. Adaptive expertise allows healthcare professionals to respond effectively to novel situations, adapt their knowledge and skills, and innovate in their practice. In the rapidly evolving field of healthcare, new treatments, technologies, research findings and practices emerge constantly. Professionals with adaptive expertise are thought to be better equipped to integrate new knowledge into their practice and continually improve their skills and patient outcomes.

This workshop will provide an opportunity for in-depth exploration of the science of adaptive expertise. Faculty will (a) discuss the constructs of adaptive expertise, (b) provide examples of evidence-based cognitive and curricular mechanisms that support development of adaptive expertise and (c) help participants envision the translation of this large body of theoretical research into education practice. The combination of theory, specific examples and in-depth discussion will allow participants to support and change practice in their own contexts.

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the imperative for adaptive expertise in the health professions;
  • Describe how cognitive and curricular mechanisms support development of adaptive expertise; and
  • Apply this curricular and cognitive lens to their own educational program

Who would benefit most from this workshop?

  • Faculty teaching in health professions
  • Health professionals acting as mentors, clinical educators, or coaches
  • Health professions education scholars

    Leadership in medicine is often framed in terms of skills and competencies. Yet many of the challenges clinicians face require something deeper: character. This session introduces character-based leadership as a complementary and necessary lens for understanding leadership in health professions education and clinical practice.
