Description
Involving patients in health professions education enriches learning, fosters empathy, and bridges the gap between clinical training and lived experience. While patient involvement is increasingly prioritized, its purpose and implementation are often unclear or inconsistent. Educators and patient partners alike may struggle to navigate the ethical, pedagogical, and relational complexities involved. Without critical reflection and shared understanding, efforts risk becoming tokenistic rather than transformative.
This workshop aims to support educators and people with lived experience in exploring the diverse ways patients can meaningfully contribute to health professions education - from one-time involvement to deep, co-creative partnerships. The session will introduce a conceptual framework for patient involvement and invite critical reflection on goals, roles, and ethical responsibilities. Through discussion, case examples, and guided reflection, participants will: (a) explore the spectrum of patient involvement, from participation to co-production, (b) examine the ethical, relational, and social dimensions of these practices, (c) identify and clarify their own goals and values related to patient involvement and (d) begin to map out a learning plan to support thoughtful, inclusive engagement.
By the end of the session, participants will be able to:
- Describe various forms and practices of patient involvement in health professions education
- Articulate the ethical and social complexities of involving people with lived experience
- Reflect on personal or institutional goals for patient engagement
- Identify steps to support meaningful, respectful, and sustainable involvement
- Develop a personalized learning plan to deepen engagement practices
