In this session Dr. Järvelä and Dr. Brydges will talk about socially shared regulation of learning (SSRL) and how we are assessing team performance in healthcare. There is global consensus that a new set of uniquely human skills and competencies will be necessary to succeed in a rapidly changing world. These skills and competencies are central to research on regulation of learning in collaborative contexts, namely socially shared regulation of learning (SSRL). Dr. Järvelä will introduce the progress of this research and what the novel opportunities advanced learning technologies can offer for SSRL. Her research has been especially interested in how groups, and individuals in groups, can be supported to engage in, sustain, and productively regulate collaborative processes for better learning.
When assessing team performance and learning in healthcare, assessments of individuals populating the team often disregard the team aspects of clinical work, whereas assessments of the team often emphasize the collective effort, potentially missing contributions from individuals. Dr. Brydges will talk about how researchers and educators currently lack a consistent approach for training and assessing the independent performance of individuals, the inter-dependent performance of team members, and the collective performance of healthcare teams.
Presenter
Ryan Brydges holds the Professorship in Technology-Enabled Education, and is Director of Medical Education Scholarship at the Dept of Medicine, Unity Health Toronto & University of Toronto. His research focuses on how healthcare trainees, professionals, and the teams they form engage with various modes of self-regulated learning. He also tests the claims that current training prepares professionals for their future lifelong learning. He currently supervises many PhD students and medical residents who help shape and challenge his thinking daily.
Sanna Järvelä is a Professor in learning sciences and educational technology and head of the Learning and Educational Technology Research Unit (LET) in the University of Oulu, Finland. Her research aims for solving future learning challenges and she is internationally recognized for advancement of research on socially shared regulation in learning. She is the co-chief editor in the International Journal of Computer Supported Collaborative Learning, the past EARLI president, a member of OECD PISA 2025 expert group on ‘Learning in the Digital World’ and the ISLS Fellow.
