Description
In the dynamic field of health professions education, understanding the underlying paradigms that shape teaching and learning is crucial for effective educational design and practice. These paradigms can shape educators’ decisions about teaching methods, curriculum design, assessment practices, and can shape perceptions on the purpose of education, learning processes and what teaching ‘should’ look like. This workshop will introduce participants to six key paradigms of education, providing them with the conceptual knowledge and practical tools to align their teaching and assessment practices with these paradigms.
During the session, faculty will provide an overview of each paradigm, and share illustrations of their use within health professions education. Through interactive activities, participants will explore how these paradigms can impact teaching and assessment. Participants will also be provided with strategies they can then use to align their own educational practices with these paradigms.
By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
- Understand and articulate six paradigms of education relevant to health professions education.
- Recognize how these paradigms can influence teaching methods, assessment strategies, and curriculum design.
- Identify connections between educational paradigms and common practices in health professions education.
- Develop strategies for aligning their teaching and assessment approaches with the paradigms of education to enhance educational outcomes.
Who would benefit most from this workshop?
Health Professionals designing or teaching academic courses or creating professional development and/or faculty teaching in health professions.
