In this presentation, we'll discuss the what, why, and where of humility through a brief history of the concept and how it relates specifically to healthcare and health professions education. We'll then explore the how of humility by identifying specific strategies and exercises to cultivate humility and related "muscles." 

Presenter

Barret Michalec, PhD, is the Director of the Center for Advancing Interprofessional Practice, Education, and Research (CAIPER) and an Associate Professor at the Edson College of Nursing and Health Innovation. As a trained sociologist, his research focuses on the socialization and professionalization processes within health professions education and practice. His work particularly emphasizes the development of socio-emotional and team-based skills. Recently, Michalec has been exploring the socio-cultural role(s) of humility in healthcare and health professions education from both practitioners' and students' perspectives.
