Membership Mondays - Planetary Health: What is it? What is the impact for Faculty Development?
This virtual community event is for CFD members to come together to during a lunch and learn to discuss emerging curiosities, questions and tensions within health professions education on the topic of the month.
Description
Health professionals and health scientists must be able to recognize and respond to climate change and the eco-social determinants of health, and to contribute to a more equitable and sustainable world. Faculty development has an important role in this emerging need, but we are still understanding the most meaningful impact.
This session will provide a brief overview of the key issues of climate, health & sustainable care, and then engage in dialogue with Fiona Miller and Ross Upshur of the Collaborative Centre for Climate, Health & Sustainable Care at University of Toronto to surface questions and opportunities for our field in the future of this work.

Speakers
Fiona A. Miller
Dr. Fiona A. Miller is a Professor of Health Policy and holds the Chair in Health Management Strategies in the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health. Miller directs the Collaborative Centre for Climate, Health and Sustainable Care, a multi-faculty unit at the University of Toronto, and a national initiative for climate action and awareness in healthcare: CASCADES. In these roles, she leads and supports efforts to improve the sustainability of health systems through research, education, practice change and policy development.
As a policy scholar, Miller brings a critical political economy perspective to the analysis of health system performance, technological innovation, and sustainability transitions.
Ross E. Upshur
Ross Upshur BA (Hons.), MA, MD, MSc, MCFP, FRCPC, FCAHS is currently the Dalla Lana Chair in Clinical Public Health and Head of the Division of Clinical Public Health at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health. At the University of Toronto, he is a Professor in the Dalla Lana School of Public Health and the Department of Family and Community Medicine, Associate Director of the Collaborative Centre for Climate, Health and Sustainable Care, Affiliate Member of the Institute for the History and Philosophy of Science and Technology, Member of the Joint Centre for Bioethics. He serves as Co-chair of the WHO Ethics and Governance Working Group, chairs the Canadian College of Family Physicians Ethics Committee and is Special Advisor to the Ethics Review Board of Doctors Without Borders. Research interests span multiple domains at the intersection of ethics, epistemology, clinical medicine and public health with applications to climate change, pandemics and artificial intelligence. He is an elected Fellow of the Hastings Center and the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences.
