Across the globe, many organizations responsible for educating healthcare professionals have shifted to some form of competency-based education (CBE). In such systems, trainees receive more assessments of, and feedback on, their performance in the form of competencies, milestones, and/or entrustable professional activities (EPAs). With these transitions, much debate has emerged regarding how best to implement CBE successfully, and whether evidence exists to substantiate many of the claimed benefits made by the originators and governing bodies mandating such change. Whether you’re a frontline teacher, a health professions learner, an education researcher, or an education leader, this Dialogue and Debate Series event will update you on the state of CBE in Canada, and beyond. In particular, Dr. Markku Nousiainen (University of Toronto) and Dr. Rose Hatala (University of British Columbia) will explore the myriad challenges facing implementation of ‘Competence By Design’ (CBD) in Canada. We will encourage community participation via moderation discussion and an open Q & A session.
This is an open invitation. You may forward it to all interested parties. However, all parties must register to join the series. Space is limited and registration is filled at a first-come-first-serve basis. This session is free of charge but advance registration is mandatory. Upon registration, you will receive log-in details for the virtual (Zoom) event.
We strive to create a safe space for collegial debate, moderated discussion, and audience Q & A. This includes limiting audience size for most of our DDS events.
Brief speaker bios and presentation abstracts:
Dr. Rose Hatala is a general internist, palliative care physician and a Professor in the UBC Department of Medicine. She is a previous Associate Program Director for the UBC internal medicine residency program and is currently the Internal Medicine Competency Committee Chair. Her educational research career has focused on assessment methods, clinical reasoning and simulation. Lately, she has been exploring clinical supervision and feedback in the era of Competency-Based Medical Education.
In her presentation, Rose will discuss some of the philosophical and practical challenges of CBD implementation within the internal medicine context and the implications for similar non-procedural specialties.
Dr. Markku Nousiainen is an Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery and the former Program Director for the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Toronto. He helped implement and lead the program through its transformation into a competency-based curriculum. Dr. Nousiainen’s research interests involve the development, implementation, and assessment of competency-based residency training curricula, policy in fellowship-level education, and in surgical skills education at the novice and expert levels.
In his presentation, Markku will discuss the original impetus for competency-based medical education, the lessons learned from the first clinical program to pilot test a completely CBE approach (the residency training program in the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Toronto), and his thoughts on the initial implementation of the Competence By Design initiative from the Royal College.
