Description

Transformational theory suggests that emotion and affect are as important for learning as formal clinical reasoning.  For health professionals this includes actively incorporating their experiences as listeners into day-to-day clinical interactions.

The central goals of the workshop are to actively engage emotion and affect as a form of knowledge through storytelling to gain understanding about how trust, connection and empathy shapes communication processes.

The workshop is relevant to health care practitioners in all fields from novice to veteran, who are interested in exploring the reciprocal benefit of empathic conversation.

Following the workshop participants will be able to: describe how emotional memory transforms knowledge through close listening to another’s experience; demonstrate empathic communication and discuss its impact on the patient clinician relationship; and appreciate relational possibilities that can occur through mutual narrative experience.
